[00:20.20]Haroun Tazieff,the Polish scientist,
[00:23.25]has spent his lifetime studying active volca-noes and deep caves in all parts of the world
[00:29.73]In 1948,he went to Lake Kivu in the Congo
[00:34.07]to observe a new volcano which he later named Kituro.
[00:38.62]Tazieff was able to set up his camp very close to the volcano
[00:43.09]while it was erupting violently.
[00:45.94]Though he managed to take a number of brilliant photographs,
[00:49.74]he could not stay near the volcano for very long.
[00:53.52]He noticed that a river of liquid rock was coming towards him.
[00:58.19]It threatened to surround him completely,
[01:00.94]but Tazieff managed to escape just in time.
[01:04.84]He waited until the volcano became quiet and he was able to return two days later.
[01:11.39]This time,he managed to climb into the mouth of Kituro
[01:15.82]so that he could take photographs and measure temperatures
[01:19.77]Tazieff has often risked his life in this way.
[01:23.75]He has been able to tell us more about active volcanoes than any man alive.
